1) Both the back- and foreground are overly cluttered and distract from the focus, the gate
2) When taking a shot straight on, you really have to "dress it up" a little. Things like the rule of thirds, contrast, and objects of interest really come into play here. It's usually easier to shoot from a different angle. If you really want a straight shot, try it looking up or looking down on the object, though looking up would have been easier here, considering the placement of it. You could have benefitted from those two angled poles giving some upward flow to the composition, as opposed to th jumble introduced by all the people, trees, and buildings.
In short, this was a really hard shot to take. It was a nice concept, it's just difficult to execute well. The overcast sky may have even hurt you here, and you can't control that a bit.
